April 2nd, 2025 – BREAKERS PUSH TO THE END
The Pacific Grove Breakers took on Monte Vista Christian in a thrilling meet that saw the boys' team secure a strong 81-61 victory, while the girls battled hard but fell short, 56-79. PRs were set, personal bests were shattered, and one very special debut took place—introducing the "Magic Fingers" technique in the pole vault.
Boys’ Team: Speed, Strength, and Sorcery in the Vault
The sprint squad set the tone early, with Travis Travaille burning up the track in the 100m (11.39) and 200m (23.47) taking first in both. In JV action, Ben Kelly (13.48 PR) and Lachlan Whitson (13.75) showed their potential.
Distance events saw Antony Gabrik dominate and take the gold in the 1600m (4:35.52) and 3200m (10:24.72), while Betinho Zunguze (2:13.80) and Tadeo Ortiz (2:14.36 SR) kept the 800m competitive. Rahul Kumar pulled off a JV 400m/300m hurdles sweep (1:04.44, 56.21 PR), proving he's got both speed and stamina.
Field events delivered major points, with Gideon Llantero winning both shot put (36-03.50) and discus (108-07), and Matias De La Garza right behind in both events (35-03.75 shot put, 101-06 PR discus). In the jumps, Sergen Serttunc (20-06 PR, long jump) and Trenton Maciel (5-06, high jump) kept the Breakers flying high.
The highlight of the night? The debut of the "Magic Fingers" technique—a mysterious new method unleashed for Matias De La Garza in the pole vault. With his teammates on the sideline wiggling their fingers in mystical support, Matias soared to victory, clearing 10-00. Was it skill? Hard work? Or did "Magic Fingers" truly provide the boost? We may never know. Check the video above to see for yourself.
MAGIC FINGERS DEBUT
On the girls’ side, Jasmine Samuels led the charge in sprints, hitting PRs in the 100m (13.73) and 200m (28.70). Meredith Evans (1:04.10 PR, 400m) showed strength on the track and in the high jump (4-04).
The throwers continued their dominance, with Molly Selfridge (27-04, shot put) and Helen Hanalla (96-07 PR, discus) leading the way. Meanwhile, Sophia Schulz took first in long jump (15-01.50) and triple jump (30-10.50 PR), proving she can fly.
With another meet in the books, the Breakers are proving they have the speed, strength, and now—perhaps—the magic to keep this momentum rolling. Will “Magic Fingers” become a permanent part of the Breakers’ arsenal? Only time will tell.
The Breakers will be taking a small crew (22) to King City Invite, while the majority of the team rests up for a home meet battle against North Salinas on 4/9.
