May 2nd, 2025 — The championship for the Cypress Division was finally here, and it all came down to one meet. The boys came in undefeated. The girls? One loss—to Monte Vista Christian. Both teams needed a win to be crowned league champs. The day started like any other, but as the meet went on, scratches started piling up, and this coach was feeling the uncertainty.
But then... the Breakers broke through.
Let’s start with the boys, who battled through adversity—shin splints, last-minute scratches due to injury, and fierce competition—to emerge as league champions with a commanding 161 points, well ahead of North Salinas (97) and Monte Vista Christian (90). Leading the charge was Travis Travaille, who dazzled with a win in the 100 meters (11.07 PR and school record), a second-place finish in the 200 meters (22.38 PR and school record), and another runner-up performance in the long jump (20'11.25"). Antony Gabrik delivered one of the most clutch performances of the meet, winning three grueling events: the 1600 meters (4:34), the 3200 meters (10:10), and the 300m hurdles (45.72). Gabrik single handedly bolstered the boys scores by 30 points. The 800 meters featured a strong 1-2 punch from Betinho Zunguze and Tadeo Ortiz, who placed third and fourth, respectively, both notching personal bests. Ortiz also took fourth in the 400 meters with a PR of 53.24.
In the field events, Trenton Maciel soared to first place in the high jump with a personal best of 5'10" and added points in the triple jump as well. Sergen Serttunc was everywhere, finishing third in the long jump, high jump, and triple jump. In the throws, Gideon Llantero came through with second-place finishes in both the shot put and discus, with Matias De La Garza backing him up with two strong third-place performances in the same events. The relays came up big as well—the boys’ 4x400 team (Zunguze, Travaille, Joseph Grief, Ortiz) placed third with a time of 3:41, and the 4x100 team (Adam Motter, Serttunc, Lachlan Whitson, Llantero) took fourth in 47.51.
The true story of the meet was the depth of the boys’ team. Points came from every event group—sprints, distance, hurdles, jumps, and throws—which is exactly what it takes to bring home a championship trophy.
The girls’ team finished a strong second overall, behind a powerful Monte Vista Christian squad, but delivered many inspiring performances throughout the day. Sophia Schulz dominated the horizontal jumps, winning both the long jump (15'1.75") and the triple jump (32'3" PR) just one inch short of making it on the records board. Molly Selfridge earned the title of shot put champion with a personal best of 30 feet, improving her Frosh/Soph record by 2 inches. Selfridge even and added a fifth-place finish in discus. Helen Hanalla also stood out, taking second in discus and seventh in shot put.
Meredith Evans grabbed first place in the high jump at 4'8" and contributed on the relay teams, while follow high jumper, Eden Gamecho took 3rd with a jump of 4'2" (PR). Yeva Yevdash finished fourth in both hurdle races, setting personal bests in each. Sulachhya Gurung scored valuable points with a fifth-place PR in the 400 meters (1:09) and a fourth-place finish in the 800, where she was joined by Nika Berezina and Liliana Papandreopoulos—both of whom scored across multiple distance events. Kamila Tagirova added points in the 800 as well. The girls’ 4x400 relay team (Papandreopoulos, Schulz, Gurung, Evans) battled to a second-place finish in 4:45, while the 4x100 squad (Evans, Schulz, Yevdash, Jasmine Samuels) placed fourth in 54.89.
With so many athletes stepping up across all disciplines, the girls left no doubt that they’re a team to watch—and they’ll be sending several individual qualifiers to the next round as well.
Final Thoughts:
The boys are your Cypress Division Champions, and the girls capped off an incredible season with a second-place finish. Together, they’re sending more than 30 athletes on to the PCAL Masters Meet—a huge accomplishment for this growing program. It was a day full of grit, guts, and personal bests. The fog might keep us cool on the coast, but this team brought all the heat we needed.
